Building Health with Design!
Hi, I’m Alvaro Valera Sosa, Director of Building Health Lab and a faculty member in the Urban Management Program at the Technical University of Berlin since 2017. At Building Health Lab, my focus is on
UrbanCare, an award-winning framework that supports cities in planning for healthier, more pedestrian-friendly public spaces. We’re proud to have received funding from a prestigious EU grant to make this work possible.
As a board member of the
Cities & Health Journal, I also lead the development of the CityKnow-how.com platform—a digital space created to improve access to scientific research and connect experts with the wider community. My background includes pioneering Evidence-Based Design research at TU Berlin’s Architecture for Health department (2013-2018), where I enjoyed teaching master’s students how to use data to address spatial challenges in healthcare environments.
Through Building Health Lab, I collaborate with global organizations like the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) to create healthier, more resilient cities. We’re always interested in partnering with academic institutions, city governments, and industry leaders to grow
UrbanCare and our
PedestrianHealth initiatives, helping municipalities design healthier, more sustainable cities.
